FORGOTTEN SPLATTER POLLOCK COLLECTION -  FROM THE FLOOR OF JACKSON POLLOCK STUDIO ®

"Ever since the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center opened in 1988, the property, and the studio in particular, have inspired artists working in various genres," says Helen A. Harrison, the museum's director. "Alex M. Wolff’s imaginative responses to the studio floor add an expressive dimension that honors the evidence of Jackson Pollock’s singular creative process while taking it to a new level of visual dynamism."

Every splash of paint and shape in this collection was left on the studio floor during Pollock’s action painting, as some paint unintentionally missed the canvasses he was working on. There was an overlap of canvass placements, leaving residual color from multiple palettes and shapes. Since he passed in 1956, thousands of people have walked on the floor, dulling the colors somewhat.

Wolff, in 2014, photographically captured snippets of the floor and transformed them into exciting, compelling pieces.  Some images of the collection represent the original capture of the abstracts left behind as tiles that can be used to generate new images. Alex symmetrized many of these tiles into kaleidoscopic images, adding some order to the chaos without diminishing the original abstracts left by Pollock’s misses.
